Mary Margaret Rogers, retired professor
Mary “Marme” Margaret Rogers, 85, of Lewes, formerly of Rockville, Md., died peacefully at her home Thursday, March 31, 2011, surrounded by her family. She was born March 7, 1926, in Chicago, Ill., daughter of the late Frederick Thomas and Dell Marie (Thouy) Winterfield.
Mrs. Rogers graduated from Sacred Heart Academy, Washington, D.C. in 1943. She started her college education at Rosary College, River Forest, Ill. and graduated in 1947 from George Washington University with a bachelor's degree in English. While employed by the University of Maryland as a professor of speech and drama and doing her post-graduate work in speech and drama at Catholic University, she was swept off her feet by the love of her life, Charles M. Rogers. They married June 4, 1949 and raised eight wonderful children, all gifts from God.
She was an accomplished painter and “life master” Bridge player. While living in Rockville, she was a founding parishioner of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church and a member of St. Patrick’s Bridge Group. After moving to Delaware, she was a member of St. Edmond’s Catholic Church, Rehoboth Beach and the Bay Crossing Community Club, Lewes. Mrs. Rogers enjoyed the theatre, music, poetry, reading, traveling, family events, and just going out. Her door was always open to family and their pets, especially Finnegan. Mrs. Rogers was the loving matriarch of a very large family who will be honored, remembered and missed by so many.
Mrs. Rogers is survived by her husband of 61 years, Charles M. Rogers; four sons: Bryan Rogers and wife Krista of Malvern, Pa., Andrew Rogers of Frederick, Md., Stephen Rogers and wife Jeannie of Glen Burnie, Md., and Matthew Rogers and wife “common law” Lorig Charkoudian; four daughters: Mary Dell Rogers of Hagerstown, Md., Kathleen Rogers-Senuta and husband John Senuta of Walkersville, Md., Monica Merkel and husband Jim of Walkersville, and Elizabeth McGowan and husband Pete of Carrollton, Va.; 33 grandchildren: Amy, Kyle, Casey, Jason, Colin, Ashtyn, Mignon, Joshua, Jake, Jeremiah, Mollie, Marta, Monica, Job, Jude, Mary, Chad, Dane, Tanner, Dillon, Tyson, McCall, Matty Jake, Stephanie, Maureen, Mollie, Patrick, Aline, Raffi, Grace, Seamus, Paddy, and Clare; and five great-grandchildren: KayLee, Aiden, Camryn, Kierstyn, and Ana.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at noon, Friday, April 8, at St. Edmond’s Catholic Church, 409 King Charles Ave., Rehoboth Beach. Friends may begin calling at the church at 10 a.m.; the Rosary will be recited at 10 a.m. Interment will be at 1 p.m., Saturday, April 9, at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, 13801 Georgia Ave., Silver Spring, Md. Arrangements are being handled by Parsell Funeral Homes & Crematorium, Lewes.
