Maureen Helen McDonnell, retired teacher
Maureen Helen McDonnell, 74, of Lewes, passed away Tuesday, Oct. 8, 2024, peacefully at home after a long illness. She was born Feb. 8, 1949, in Philadelphia, Pa., beloved daughter of Frank and Helen (Summerfelt) Feeney.
Maureen earned her master’s degree in education in 1978 and dedicated her life to teaching in the public school system. Over her remarkable 45-year career, she inspired countless students at both the elementary and middle school levels. Her passion for education and nurturing spirit made a lasting impact on all who knew her.
Maureen married her beloved husband, Joe McDonnell, Aug. 10, 1974, in Somerdale, N.J. Together, they built a life filled with love, laughter, and shared adventures.
Maureen was a prolific reader who cherished the stories that transported her to new worlds. She loved to shop, travel, and explore craft fairs, often returning with treasures that reflected her creative spirit. Her warmth, kindness, and joy for life will be deeply missed by her family and friends.
Maureen was predeceased by her parents, Frank and Helen Feeney; her siblings, Jim and Barbara Feeney, and Pat and Jack Crogan. She is survived by her husband, Joe McDonnell of Lewes; her daughter, Meredith Fortier (Roger); her granddaughter, Aubrey Fortier of Bristow, Va.; and her son, Chris McDonnell (Ana) of Arizona.
Maureen's legacy of love and education will continue to inspire those she touched throughout her life.
