Democratic lieutenant governor candidate Kathy McGuiness unveiled a 13-point jobs plan for Delaware during a press conference June 28 in Middletown.

Entitled Standing Up for Jobs Plan, the plan’s initiatives focus on creating a board to allow small business owners to propose ways to streamline the regulatory process; forming a think tank bringing Delaware’s best business and public policy professionals together to look at ways to create a more entrepreneurial economy; and developing a second-chance employment program designed to help people get off unemployment.

The plan is the culmination of a monthlong, statewide listening tour by McGuiness with entrepreneurs and business owners to ask what state government could do to create more high-paying jobs.

McGuiness said she was excited to unveil her plan.

“I have met with many businesses and industries to discuss how we can grow the economy, make it easier for small businesses to thrive and provide more high-paying jobs to Delawareans,” she said in a prepared statement.

McGuiness said she intends to fight for equal pay, paid family leave and a living wage to eliminate the wage gap and provide working families better opportunities to balance work and home life.

“This plan sets me apart from my competitors because I have offered real solutions that will lead to real results. I have prided myself on bringing ideas on paper to reality and with the voters' support, I will do that for Delaware," she said.

McGuiness, a native of Rehoboth, is one of six Democratic candidates who have filed for the vacant lieutenant governor seat. The other five include Greg Fuller, Lincoln resident and former Sussex County register of wills; Kent County Levy Court Vice President Brad Eaby; New Castle County Register of Wills Ciro Poppiti III; Sen. Bethany Hall-Long, D-Middletown; and Wilmington City Councilwoman Sherry Dorsey Walker.

The lieutenant governor’s seat has been vacant since Matt Denn was elected attorney general in 2014.

The filing deadline to run for office in the Tuesday, Sept. 13 statewide primary is noon, Tuesday, July 12. The deadline to register to vote is Saturday, Aug. 20.
