Michael S. Hitchens, veteran, DelDOT retiree

Michael S. Hitchens passed away Sunday evening, Aug. 4, 2024, surrounded by his wife and family.

A native of Odessa, he was born Sept. 12, 1942, to the late Charles Jr. and Frances Hitchens. Michael was a Class of 1960 graduate of Middletown High School. After graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Army, serving as an MP in the Dominican Republic.

Upon his return home, he met and married the love of his life in 1967, Margaret Emma Reihm, and started working for the State of Delaware Department of Transportation, where he remained for over 30 years and retired as the chief safety officer.

In addition to his parents, Michael was preceded in death by his older brother, Charles III (Skip); sister-in-law Joan; his sister, Dorothy; and brother-in-law Smokey Smith.

He is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Margaret Emma; his son, Josh and wife Erin; his granddaughter, Georgia; and last but not least his beloved granddog, Henry.

A service with military honors will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, Aug. 9, at Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery chapel, 26669 Patriots Way, Millsboro. A Celebration of Life will follow at Lewes Yacht Club at 12:30 pm.
