Mike McLean wins SmashMouth burger-eating contest
Celebrating National Burger Day in style, SmashMouth Burgers held its inaugural burger-eating contest May 28.
The 11 athletes who competed in the contest walked on stage to the theme from “Rocky,” looking just as nimble as they made their way up the ramp.
Mike McLean, a multi-time winner of the pumpkin pie-eating contest held during Sea Witch, was the winner, eating not quite seven double-pattied cheeseburgers, buns included, in 10 minutes. He won some cash, a trophy and a cheeseburger hat.
Dan Rock finished second with five-and-a-half cheeseburgers. John Duckworth came in third with five.
Twenty percent of all food and drink sales during the event will be donated to the Harry K Foundation, a Rehoboth Beach-based organization that raises money to alleviate the problem of food insecurity by supporting the Food Bank of Delaware.
