Millsboro Art League opens Creative Hearts show

Salvation Army Mixed media show features artists
September 2, 2015

The Millsboro Art League recently opened a new show in collaboration with the Salvation Army's Creative Hearts program for developmentally disabled artists.

Mixed media, watercolor and acrylic works will line the walls of the are league, where 15 artists from the Creative Hearts program take structured classes twice a month led by instructors Arlene Bailor and Barbara Harris.

Six to 12 student artists explore watercolor and acrylic, two-and-three dimensional techniques, and catch up on some art history from master artists and their work.

Salvation Army Developmental Disabilities Program Director Christy Cugno said the program is mostly self-supporting; the sale of paintings and note cards go to help buy supplies and resources.

"The program is totally for them and about them," Cugno said. "They pretty much run the program, and they are very involved in the process."

Some artists work full-time, she said, whereas others pick and choose when, and what they want to paint.

Sarah Bosco is a full-time artist from the program who also painted "Tree of Hope" in March 2011. The limited edition print is available as a full, framed work or on notecards, much like many of the other artworks on display.

The Millsboro Art League gallery is open 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., Fridays and Saturdays, and from 1 to 3 p.m., Sundays.

The Salvation Army Creative Hearts art show will run through Oct. 4. For more information, go to www.millsboroartleague.com.

"They are very eager to learn any technique that is offered to them," Cugno said. "Every artist has a different way to express themselves."
