Milton council chooses tagline

Some residents and officials think slogan falls short
October 11, 2024

Milton Town Council, by a 6-1 vote, approved “Walkable. Liveable. Unforgettable.” as the town’s new tagline but with some modifications.

Right away at council’s Oct. 7 meeting, there was some dissatisfaction with the two choices that were presented by the town’s economic development committee, which were “Walkable. Livable. Unforgettable.” and “Charming. Welcoming. Thriving.”

During public comment, Milton resident Betty McGrath said the tagline choices, the result of months of work by the committee and contractor Hook PR, did not reflect the historic nature of Milton.

Several council members agreed with that sentiment, including council members Randi Meredith and Scotty Edler, who said Milton’s history is one of the things that draws people and that should be reflected in promotional materials such as the tagline, which also came with a logo that showed the river and downtown business district.

“The main selling point for this town is history,” Edler said. “When I go anywhere in the United States, the first thing people ask me is ‘What is Milton about?’ And the first thing I think of is our downtown. I would really like to have seen something that evokes something of our history.”

Vice Mayor Lee Revis-Plank, who served as the only no vote, said, “I absolutely hate both of them. I don’t think they’re accurate.”

Councilman Tom Arkinson, who served as the committee’s council liaison, said the tagline was aimed at people who don’t already live in Milton, to give them a hook to visit and explore the town.

Council agreed to add “historic” along with Milton on the logo to incorporate history into the logo. Because the town’s contract with Hook had been fulfilled, council had options: they could have either rejected the taglines, select one or make alterations.

The $5,000 tagline project started in early 2023 as a way of creating a shorthand to describe what is special about Milton. One of the models for what the committee is looking for is Berlin, Md., which uses the tagline, “Artistically Alive, Eternally Young.” Lewes-based Hook PR was selected for the job after a call for proposals.
