The Town of Milton has put out the call for candidates for this year’s municipal election, with a filing deadline set for Tuesday, Dec. 31.
This year, three seats are in play: those currently held by Mayor John Collier, and Councilmen Tom Arkinson and Larry Savage. So far, Collier and Arkinson have filed for re-election.
Arkinson said, “I am seeking election to continue in my role as councilman for the Town of Milton so that I can be a part of the process that ensures the town remains a genuinely desirable place to call home. I realize that many of the items that come before the council require study and understanding which I have made a point of doing. I have gained significant insights, and if elected I can hit the ground running. Public service can be tough at times but it is also rewarding.”
Collier said he would release a statement on his reelection bid at a later date.
Milton’s election will be held Saturday, March 1, at Milton fire hall. Votes will be tallied and the winner announced at town hall after the polls close at 6 p.m.
Those seeking to run must be a U.S. citizen and have had a primary legal residence in Milton for at least one year before the election. Candidates must be at least 21 years old, have no outstanding debt to the town, no felony convictions and have not been judged mentally incompetent.
Of the three incumbents, Collier is seeking his second term as mayor after being elected in 2022, defeating two-term incumbent Ted Kanakos. He had previously served two separate stints on council and had also been the town’s project coordinator.
Savage was appointed to council in 2021, filling the remaining year of the term left by Councilman Michael Cote, who died in April of that year. Savage won a full term in 2022.
Arkinson was appointed to council in September 2023 to fill the remaining term of Councilwoman Annette Babich, who had resigned her seat.
Those wishing to vote must register at town hall by Thursday, Jan. 30. Any registered voter who cannot make it to the polls on election day can file an absentee ballot. To vote absentee, a voter must fill out an affidavit at town hall by Friday, Feb. 28. All absentee ballots must be received by the close of the polls March 1.
