Milton Elementary, Mariner Middle schools give out March GEM awards
Two specialists and two substitute teachers from Milton Elementary and Mariner Middle School were named recipients of the Going the Extra Mile award at the March 27 Cape school board meeting.
Milton Elementary named Sarah McCabe and Darcy Mimms as this month’s recipients of the award. Mariner Middle School named Mike Lewis and Gabe Westcott.
McCabe, a reading specialist, is recognized for her “unwavering support, kindness and dedication,” school officials said.
“Her calm and approachable demeanor fosters an environment where teachers feel comfortable seeking guidance, ensuring they have the necessary support and skills to implement highly effective instructional practices in their classrooms,” the nomination said.
Mimms, a substitute teacher, has shown “exceptional flexibility and expertise,” regularly putting in extra work to ensure students and staff feel supported, board member Marjorie Belmont said on behalf of the school. Mimms’ positive attitude doesn’t go unnoticed.
Lewis, a school psychologist, puts his all into his work each and every day, Mariner officials said. He shows compassion and expertise in helping students navigate difficult situations and mental health crises.
He also ensures students get the support they need by conducting thorough 504 and educational support plan evaluations, the nomination said.
Westcott, a substitute teacher, is an invaluable part of the Mariner team and is always willing to help, according to his nomination. It said, “His versatility and dedication allow him to seamlessly transition between roles, ensuring that learning continues even in challenging situations.”
