May 28, 2024

The Milton New Music & Wind Fest will be held from 2 p.m. to dusk, Saturday, June 1, in Federal Street field, 614 Federal St., Milton. Free parking is available across the street and at Dogfish Head Brewery.

The event will welcome performances by Sun Ra Arkestra, Ensemble Volcanic Ash, and T.K. Blue and Fostina Dixon. Family fun activities will include free kite-making and flying plus an arts-themed picnic.

This year features a special celebration of 100 trips around the sun by saxophonist/flutist/conductor Maestro Marshall Allen. Allen was born May 25, 1924, and assumed leadership of the Sun Ra Arkestra almost 30 years ago.

Ensemble Volcanic Ash, Janel Leppin’s stellar ensemble, returns to the Milton fest for an encore performance. The group, comprising Janel Leppin (composer/cello), Luke Stewart (bass), Anthony Pirog (guitar), Brian Settles (tenor sax), Sarah Hughes (alto sax) and Larry Ferguson (drums), will feature their newly created music to be released on Cuneiform Records later in June.

T.K. Blue and Fostina Dixon will perform the premiere of their work, “100 For Marshall,” celebrating their friend and fellow musician Allen on alto saxophone and flute. Both are renowned jazz touring artists, now based in the Delaware artistic community.
