Milton seeks artists for Mill Park installation

Mural project to be displayed from April 15 through June 30
February 2, 2023

Public art will be returning to Mill Park in Milton this spring, as the town’s economic development committee has put out a call for eight artists to take part in a mural installation.

In all, the committee is planning to have 12 murals in the park, measuring 6 feet tall and 3 feet wide. The theme for the project is Greetings.

Four of the murals will be painted by students – one each from Milton Elementary, H.O. Brittingham Elementary, Mariner Middle School and Cape Henlopen High School. The remaining eight will be by artists selected by an independent, five-person jury comprising representatives from Milton Arts Guild, Milton Theatre and Broadkill Tattoo Company.

Committee Chair Annette Babich said, “We always talked about murals and if we had one in town, what would it be or what would it say? That’s a hard question when you think about having a permanent installation that represents who we are as a town and community. So, we thought, why don’t we have a temporary mural installation in Mill Park. This is a nice way to get our feet wet in exploring the idea of murals in town and a nice way to engage the community.”

She said the theme of Greetings was fun, positive, friendly and open to interpretation.

Artists must submit their pitches by Friday, Feb. 24, and include their name, phone number, address, email address and three photos of previous work. The selected artists will be announced Friday, March 3. They will receive a $500 honorarium and $150 for materials, with the 3-by-6 piece of plywood supplied by the committee.

The installation will be unveiled to the public Saturday, April 15, and run until Friday, June 30.

This will be the second public art installation sponsored by the committee, part of a three-year plan to bring public art to Milton. The first was three wood sculptures donated by Lewes artist Roy Fitzgerald unveiled in September and displayed for six weeks.

Babich said the committee is working on another art installation for later this year, with plans for it to run from July into the fall.
