Mind-body medicine is emerging as a significant field on the health and medical fronts.
Dr. Dezzy Udezue, MD, MPH, and Carolyn Showell, LCSW, of Renewed Medical Center in Millsboro will lead a series of talks on healing physical disease, emotional distress and mental illness through a better understanding of this scientific paradigm shift. The first discussion will be from 12 to 2 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 15, at Lewes Public Library. Attendance is free. The series is partially sponsored by Visiting Angels of Sussex.
Udezue said, “Healing is possible when treatment addresses the undisputed connection between mind and body. The practice is historical, intellectual and practical, and fast becoming recognized as the new frontier in medicine.”
Udezue and Showell’s experience with addiction treatment provides an excellent example of the connection between the mind, brain and body. With substance abuse, for example, cyclical thoughts lead to drug use, which creates new pathways in the brain. These changes affect one's everyday behavior and can eventually lead to disease.
Udezue said, “The concept of our thoughts creating our reality is no longer a philosophical debate. Consider that every physical item, from a chair to a skyscraper or jet fighter, all began as a single thought!”
The brain interprets thoughts and puts them into action. It records, relays and decodes the activities of the mind, and produces chemicals and electric pathways throughout the body. Therefore, the thoughts of the mind and how the brain interprets them directly affect health. Wellness is more than masking symptoms. It means returning the entire body-mind to a state of homeostasis.
“We are created with an internal drive toward this state of perfect wellness,” said Showell. “However, emotions, trauma, genetics and environment may contribute to illness and disease, so the proper approach to health requires addressing the interconnectedness of all things.”
It is becoming an accepted truth that thoughts and energy may be the key to people’s health and wellness. Harvard Medical School now teaches mind-body medicine, and dozens of the best universities offer programs and PhD specializations in related subjects or projects.
Udezue said, “If medicine has compassionate regard for the humanity of those it serves, it is faced with questions about how it understands and interprets the connections between a person’s emotional, psycho-spiritual and physical states. At Renewed Medical Center, we address the whole person, mind and body, therefore healing at the root cause of illness becomes possible.”
Talks will be about the mind-body connection, and how healing and preventing disease requires a combination of physical, spiritual, and emotional approaches, including how to release subconscious blocks to health, wealth, happiness, creativity and weight loss with cutting-edge innovative technology for healing the body at a cellular level by restoring cells’ mitochondrial oxygen and energy systems.
Upcoming discussions on innovative approaches to healing will include cellular healing using ozone therapy for any illness or cancer; prolozone therapy for pains and joint healing; stem cell therapy for pains and joint and tissue; alternative and holistic approaches to addiction and mood disorders; mind therapy including hypnotherapy; emotional freedom technique (tapping); EMDR; electromagnetic biofeedback therapy; energetic balancing; nutrition education; stress-reducing techniques and lifestyle medicine; and meditation and mindfulness training.
