Mudslingers Drive-Thru Coffee owner Becky Burgwin said the business’ 112-square-foot, red-roofed structure is beginning to garner some attention.

People are asking if its a tiny house or a phone booth, she said, while standing in the parking lot of Sandpiper Plaza on the northbound side Route 1 in Rehoboth.

Taking up less than two parking spaces in the lot abutting the building with Rosenfeld’s Jewish Delicatessen, Beef Jerky Outlet and Minh’s Bistro, Burgwin said when Mudslingers Drive-Thru Coffee opens in the next few weeks, it will be following a business model that’s very popular on the West Coast.

“I’ve been thinking about doing something like this for years, and I have a friend out in Oregon who kept telling me that I needed to open a drive-thru coffee place,” said Burgwin, pointing to Oregon-based Dutch Brothers Coffee as her example.

Joining Burgwin on this business venture will be her two sisters, Lela Arnold and Kathryn Burgwin. Originally from the Pittsburgh area, the sisters and the rest of their family began traveling to Rehoboth shortly after the Chesapeake Bay Bridge opened in the early 1950s.

Burgwin said Arnold will be the business manager and the recently-retired Kathryn will be a helping hand when needed.

Arnold, who moved to Rehoboth for the opportunity to work with her sisters, said she and her older sister have complementary skill sets.

“I’m very detail oriented, while Becky is good at seeing the big picture. It’s a good combination,” said Arnold.

All three sisters are self-described coffee lovers and touted the quality of beans being they will use to make the coffee. The beans are certified shade-grown, organic and fair trade, said Arnold.

The menu will feature handcrafted, made-to-order espressos, lattes, coffee, smoothies, frappes and teas. There will also be high-quality 100 percent fruit smoothies such as Ghirardelli, Monin and Dr. Smoothie.

Arnold said a small selection of grab-n-go snacks will also be available.

Burgwin said one of the things that she’s most excited about it the location.

“This process began Memorial Day 2017, and this was the only place we physically looked at,” she said. “This is a such a busy section of road and we stand out.”

Arnold said, to begin, the hours of operation for the year-round business will be 7 a.m. – 3 p.m., Monday – Friday; 8 a.m. – 4 p.m., Saturday; and 9 a.m. – 5 p.m., Sunday.
