Museum to host Golden Age of Rehoboth: Railroad Era May 2

April 24, 2019

The Rehoboth Beach Historical Society will present Paul Lovett and his tabletop diorama, “The Golden Age of Rehoboth: the Railroad Era,” at 6:30 p.m., Thursday, May 2, at the Rehoboth Beach Museum, 511 Rehoboth Ave.

The museum will open at 6:30 p.m. to allow visitors to see the first phase of a diorama depicting a cross-section of 1910 Rehoboth Ave., including models of the buildings that existed at the time, including the old railroad station. Lovett’s presentation with pictures about life in Rehoboth in the railroad era will begin at 7 p.m.

There will also be a display of memorabilia from or about the era. Among many items of note, the diorama will provide an answer to the often-asked question, “Where did the railroad turn around?”

All his life, Paul Lovett has spent time in Rehoboth along the Lewes-Rehoboth Canal by the bridge. Over the past year, he has immersed himself in the history of the city during the late 1800s and early 1900s, the railroad era. His diorama is a result of his study of many reference sources on this important time in Rehoboth’s history, and his many interviews with local folks who have ties to that earlier time. The dioramic display of Rehoboth Avenue extends from the end of the fishing pier off Horn’s Pavilion and across the canal to the railroad-switching yard.

Space may be limited, so reservations are required. To ensure a space, call 302-227-7310. The program is free for members. A $5 donation is suggested for nonmembers. There is free parking, and the museum is handicapped accessible.
