The Milford-Slaughter Neck branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People will hold its annual observance of Jubilee Day at noon, Wednesday, Jan. 1, 2020, at Bethel AME Church, 2015 N.W. 4th St., Milford.
The keynote speaker will be Dr. Reba Hollingsworth, a graduate of Delaware State College, now Delaware State University. In 1954, Hollingsworth began her teaching career in home economics at the segregated William C. Jason Comprehensive School in Georgetown. She later transferred to Dover High School, where she began a 21-year career as a guidance counselor. The Milford native, now 93, holds master’s and doctorate degrees in counseling.
Jubilee Day commemorates the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation by President Abraham Lincoln on Jan. 1, 1863. It is held each year by NAACP branches through out the United States. This year's theme is We Can't Rest Now, The Stakes Are Too High. The NAACP was founded in 1909, and is the oldest and largest civil rights organization in America. There is no admission charge for the event. For more information, contact the Rev. Jeanel Starling, 302-422-9749.
