New films to open at Cinema Art Theater

January 29, 2025

Rehoboth Beach Film Society will present screenings of “The Seed of the Sacred Fig” and “Liza: A Truly Terrific Absolutely True Story,” starting Friday, Jan. 31, at the Cinema Art Theater near Lewes.

Shot entirely in secret, Mohammad Rasoulof's thriller, “The Seed of the Sacred Fig,” centers on a family thrust into the public eye when Iman is appointed as an investigating judge in Tehran. As political unrest erupts in the streets, Iman realizes that his job is even more dangerous than expected, making him increasingly paranoid and distrustful, even of his own wife Najmeh, and daughters Sana and Rezvan.

A star-studded tribute, “Liza: A Truly Terrific Absolutely True Story” brings into focus the dazzling, complex period of Liza Minnelli's life starting in the 1970s. Just after the tragic death of her mother Judy Garland, Minnelli confronts a range of personal and professional challenges on the way to becoming a bona fide legend.

The next film in the Exhibition on Screen series will be “Van Gogh: Poets & Lovers.” Focusing on Van Gogh’s unique creative process, the film explores the artist’s years in the south of France, where he revolutionized his style. Van Gogh became consumed with a passion for storytelling in his art, turning the world around him into vibrant, idealized spaces and symbolic characters.
