New films opening at Cinema Art Theater Feb. 12

February 10, 2021

The Rehoboth Beach Film Society’s Cinema Art Theater will present “M.C. Escher: Journey To Infinity” and “Minari” starting Friday, Feb. 12.

The Escher documentary examines the methods and interests of the world-famous Dutch printmaker and visionary graphic artist.

Equal parts history, psychology, and psychedelia, director Robin Lutz’s entertaining, eye-opening portrait of Maurits Cornelis Escher (1898-1972) shows viewers the man through his own words and images. His diary musings, excerpts from lectures, correspondence and more are voiced by British actor Stephen Fry. Escher’s woodcuts, lithographs, and other print works appear in both original and playfully altered forms. Two of his sons, George (92) and Jan (80), reminisce about their parents while musician Graham Nash talks about Escher’s rediscovery in the 1970s. The film looks at Escher’s legacy; one can see tributes to his work in movies and fiction, on posters and tattoos, and elsewhere throughout modern culture. Few fine artists of the 20th century can lay claim to such a popular appeal.

Screening times are 2 p.m., Friday, Feb. 12; 5 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 13; 1 p.m., Sunday, Feb. 14; 4 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 17; and 2 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 18. Admission is $8 for members and $11 for nonmembers.

In “Minari,” the Yi family embarks on a new life in search of their own American dream with hopes of growing Korean produce. Their home changes completely with the arrival of their sly, foul-mouthed, but incredibly loving grandmother. Amid the instability and challenges of this new life in the rugged Ozarks, “Minari” shows their undeniable resilience and what really makes a home.

Screening times are 3 p.m, Friday, Feb. 12; 6 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 13; 2 p.m., Sunday, Feb. 14; 2 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 17; and 6 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 18.

Admission is $8 for members and $11 for nonmembers. Customers are encouraged to purchase tickets online at rehobothfilm.com. If seats are available, tickets can be purchased at the theater starting 30 minutes prior to each screening.
