No sooner had I landed my drone, turned off my GPS tracker and stowed my night-vision goggles than a whole slew of new eateries opened or will be opening soon. Will it ever end? I certainly hope not. What the heck would I write about?
Mike Venanzi and Bob Frankis’ Greene Turtle on the Rehoboth Boardwalk has been reborn as Above the Dunes. Totally different from the Turtle. Check it out. In Dewey, Monty Montgomery and his team are working hard to build their Starboard Claw on the spot that hosted longtime watering hole Hammerhead’s.
Now that Royal Prime Steakhouse in Bally’s Dover is up and running, Touch of Italy boss Bob Ciprietti is turning his attention to doubling the space at his Rehoboth eatery. Up north in Lewes, former Nage toque Sean Corea and partner Tommy Little will soon debut their Lewes Oyster House in the old Jerry’s spot on Second Street.
I’m impressed with Peter Elias and his Spain Wine Bar perched atop the Cambria Hotel in Ocean City. This place is a lot more than wine! Speaking of Maryland, Cambridge and St. Michaels restaurateur Chris Agharabi will soon add the third jewel to his triple crown of Rehoboth eateries: Theo’s, Ava’s and the soon-to-open Hammy’s Hideout.
Conch Island’s Bryan Derrickson has turned adversity into opportunity with his reincarnation of Conch Island Key West Bar & Grill on Rehoboth Avenue Extended. This guy does everything first class.
Former Blue Moon chef/owner Lion Gardner has teamed up with a few of the guys from The Pines to create Drift in the old Dos Locos/Seafood Shack building on Baltimore Avenue. Popular barkeep Rob Bagley will step into the GM position. Stay tuned: I’m still curious about Doggy Style next to the original Nicola’s spot on First Street (they say the empanadas are sublime) and also Fat Vinny’s expanded menu in Dewey.
In my never-ending quest to keep you informed, seems I’ll be forced to try both.
No sense goin’ ‘round hungry.
