Equine council scholarship applications due Dec. 31
The Delaware Equine Council Foundation will award $1,500 scholarships to one or more individuals who meet the required criteria. An eligible applicant must be a U.S. citizen or legal resident alien and a Delaware resident or Delaware Equine Council member, and may join during the application process.
A recipient must be enrolled and in good standing in an agricultural or equine course of study or related field, or a veterinary or vet tech program in the United States. The applicant must have completed, or be about to complete, one full college semester.
The deadline to submit applications is Tuesday, Dec. 31.

Lewes holiday closings
Lewes City Hall and the Lewes Board of Public Works offices will be closed Wednesday, Jan. 1, in observance of New Year’s Day.
Both will reopen at 8 a.m., Thursday, Jan. 2.
Commissioners tapped for positions
By unanimous vote during a meeting Dec. 20, Rehoboth Beach Commissioner Mark Saunders was appointed to the city’s personnel committee and was named as city liaison to the Cape Henlopen Senior Center.
Commissioners also voted unanimously in favor of Commissioner Craig Thier being named as city liaison to Rehoboth Beach Main Street.
Dewey renews trash & recycling contract
Dewey Beach Town Council voted Dec. 20 to approve the renewal of its trash and recycling contract.
The renewed contract lists $31.93 as the in-season price for twice-a-week trash collection and once-a-week recycling, and $27.37 as the off-season price. It also lists the in-season valet price as $16.60, and the off-season as $11.06.
Dewey Beach votes on tent regulations
Dewey Beach Town Council approved an ordinance Dec. 20 to amend its code to clarify definitions of canopy and baby tent, and to detail regulations regarding their use on the beach.
The new code establishes that traditional tents – with the exception of baby tents – are prohibited on the beach, and use of canopies on the beach is permitted, provided that no canopy is set up and left unattended on the beach prior to 9 a.m.
Dewey approves budget amendment
Dewey Beach Town Council voted Dec. 20 to approve the amended FY 2025 budget as proposed by Sheena Hall, accounting and HR manager.
The budget amendment increases net income by about $31,000.
Dewey freeboard requirement adjusted
Dewey Beach Town Council voted Dec. 20 to send a draft ordinance to the planning & zoning commission for review that would permit property owners to add an extra foot of freeboard, in addition to the mandatory two feet of freeboard that will go into effect in April 2025.
RD 20 to elect new leaders at Jan. 16 caucus
The Delaware 20th Representative District Democratic Committee will hold its caucus to elect new committee members and officers at 6 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 16, at the Lewes Diner, 1201 Savannah Road, Lewes. An informal social gathering for Dutch treat dinner starts at 5 p.m. According to Democratic Party rules, Delaware's district committees must reorganize every four years following a presidential election.
Nominees for committee membership must be registered Democrats residing in the 20th RD for at least one year before the reorganization date, and attend the meeting in person. Elected committee members will then serve until the first quarter of 2029, attending meetings and Democratic functions, and performing other tasks as local party leaders. For those unable to attend the caucus in person, a Zoom link will be provided in a future email.
RD20 is the local Democratic Party organization for residents who live in and around Lewes and Milton.
