Lewes parks panel to meet Aug. 19

The Lewes Parks and Recreation Commission will meet at 5 p.m., Monday Aug. 19, at the Rollins Center. The agenda includes presentation, discussion and possible recommendations to the Lewes Planning Commission regarding the Warrington Property relating to street trees, open space and connectivity. Special Rehoboth meeting set Aug. 20

Rehoboth Beach commissioners will hold a special meeting at 10 a.m., Tuesday, Aug. 20, in the city hall commissioners room, 229 Rehoboth Ave., in order to consider the appointment of Mark Saunders to the board of adjustment.

Senior centers get transportation funds

At its Aug. 13 meeting, Sussex County Council approved the Delaware Authority for Regional Transit, a subsidiary of DelDOT, reimbursement funds totaling $846,868 for senior centers throughout the county. On the recommendation of Finance Director Gina Jennings, the following money was allotted to senior centers: Lewes, $27,123; Cape Henlopen in Rehoboth, $43,066; CHEER Inc., $630,534; Indian River, $2,100; Nanticoke in Seaford $44,962; and Laurel, $99,083. The funds must be used for transportation-related expenses.

Route 24 intersection entering Phase 2

Phase 1 of the Robinsonville Road-Angola Road-Route 24 intersection improvements project will be completed Monday, Aug. 26, with the reopening of Robinsonville Road. Angola Road between Route 24 and Cottage Court will be closing Tuesday, Sept. 3, through the end of the year for Phase 2 of the intersection realignment and improvements.

Detour: Drivers wanting to go west on Angola Road will head north on Camp Arrowhead Road, turn left onto Route 24 and back to Angola Road. Drivers wanting to go east on Angola Road will go north on Route 24, turn right on Camp Arrowhead Road and back to Angola Road.

Closure for bypass project ongoing

The Delaware Department of Transportation announced the closure of Hollyville Road between Washington Street Ext. and Route 24 from Monday, Aug. 19, through the end of November for work related to the North Millsboro bypass. After the closure ends, existing Hollyville Road will reopen on the current alignment and cross over the new bypass.

Detour: Traffic from Route 24 should use Route 30 (Gravel Hill Road) northbound to Mount Joy Road to Hollyville Road. Southbound traffic on Hollyville Road should turn west on Mount Joy Road to Route 30 southbound to Route 24.

Lewes seeks Xmas tree donation

The City of Lewes hosts an annual community Christmas tree lighting the first Saturday in December at Zwaanendael Park, for neighbors and friends to gather and kick off the holiday season. The city is seeking a donation of a 25- to 30-foot, nicely shaped balsam fir, Douglas fir, Fraser fir or spruce tree to use for the event. Sussex SavATree Inc. will cut down, transport and install the tree at the park. Anyone who has a large tree on their property that they would like to see at the center of the City of Lewes celebration should contact Giulia Kirsch, parks and marina administrator, at gkirsch@ci.lewes.de.us or 302-645-7777, Ext. 109.

Sussex council awards community grants

Sussex County Council awarded the following councilmanic grants during its Aug. 13 meeting: $1,000 to Ron G. Williams Foundation for the Delaware Law Enforcement Thank You Ride Thursday, Aug. 22; $750 to Trinity Foundation in Seaford for its annual golf tournament Thursday, Oct. 3; $1,200 to New Coverdale Church Mission for back-to-school supplies; $1,000 to Sussex County Land Trust for sponsorship of the Dogfish Dash in Milton Sunday, Sept. 29; $4,000 to Delaware Botanic Gardens near Dagsboro for its 2024 dinner party sponsorship Thursday, Sept. 26; $1,500 to Bridgeville Apple-Scrapple Festival for its 32nd annual event Oct. 11-12; $1,000 to Western Sussex Chamber of Commerce for the Broad Creek Bike and Brew bike event Saturday, Sept. 21; $1,500 to American Cancer Society for the Saturday, Sept. 7 Sussex County Relay for Life at Sandhill Fields; $1,000 to Rehoboth Concert Band for a concert honoring veterans Sunday, Nov. 10; $500 to CHEER in Georgetown for its 14th Annual Classic Car, Truck and Bike Show; and $1,000 to Delaware State College Alumni Association for the Band to the Beach Sunday, Sept. 1.

Sussex County Council awarded the following councilmanic grants during its July 30 meeting: $750 to Town of Blades Police outreach program; $750 to Urban Youth Program Association to expand programs in Sussex County; $1,000 to Lewes Lions Foundation for its Beach Bash to benefit Lewes Fire Department; $1,500 to Lewes Public Library for its Spoken Word Society Fall 2024 Performance Series; $2,000 to Town of Millsboro Police Department to help build a fence around its basketball court; and $2,000 to Greater Millsboro Chamber of Commerce for website and visitor center upgrades.

No Sussex County Council meeting on Aug. 20

Sussex County Council will not meet Tuesday, Aug. 20. The next regularly scheduled meeting is Tuesday, Aug. 27, in the county administration building, 2 The Circle, Georgetown.
