NFL games live up to the hype

January 19, 2017

The Green Bay Packers won an extremely exciting game over the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday by a score of 34-31. The game was not decided until a last second field goal was made by Mason Crosby, from over 50 yards out. The Cowboys had tied the game with just over a minute left but it still gave Aaron Rodgers (who has been playing incredible football for the last half of the season) enough time to get the ball downfield for Crosby to pull off a very impressive field goal!

In the AFC game between Kansas City and Pittsburgh, it was close right up to the end. Kansas City had a chance to tie the game with a two point conversion play but they got robbed with a controversial call by the refs. I hope the Steelers can give New England a good game on the road.

The Australian Open tennis tournament has started with a bang. Novak Djokovic was shockingly defeated in five sets by an unknown player Denis Istomin. Djokovic usually dominates this tournament so this is a huge upset to start the year. He is already a six-time champion, but not this week! I've always thought that the scheduling of this tournament was a bit unfair for the players. They have just come off their off-season and holiday break. I wish they would just move it back a month. I think this would bring more quality performances from the players and it would still be in the Australian summer season.

The Major League Baseball Hall of Fame class was announced yesterday and two out of three of the inductees have the steroid black cloud hanging over them. They would be Jeff Bagwell, who played for the Houston Astros, and Ivan Rodriguez, who played mostly for the Texas Rangers. Rodriguez played 21 years as a catcher which is pretty amazing considering how many knee injuries most catchers get in their career. I am fine with most of the steroid era players getting in the Hall of Fame as long as there is some way to note the fact that they played during this time period. Tim Raines also got in on his 15th and final year of eligibility. He played for the Montreal Expos for most of his career and was very fast! There is no steroid suspicion for him.

My family makes great fun of my constant commentary in the course of a week of the "worst play/call ever"! For 2017, I will note the top choice of the week. This week's "worst" is... One of my pet peeves about football is how many penalties are called on kickoffs and punt returns which is ruining the use of special-teams in football. Agree?
