North side of Indian River Inlet in 1970

October 5, 2016

Things have changed dramatically on the north side of Indian River Inlet where Delaware now has a state-of-the-art marina, floating docks, dry storage, tidy little cottages for tourists, charter and head boat fishing facilities, and a causeway connecting Burton Island - upper left in this photo - to the mainland.

Back in March of 1970, when Lloyd Teitsworth and Dee Andrews took aerial photographs all over the state for a Delaware Project initiative, fixed docks, recreational trailers and comparatively limited facilities defined what was then, and still is, known as the north side.

  • Delaware Cape Region History in Photographs, published every Tuesday in the Cape Gazette, features historical photos from Delaware's Cape Region - particularly - and from throughout Sussex County and Delaware generally.

Readers are invited to submit photos of historic interest. They can be mailed to the Cape Gazette at PO Box 213, Lewes, DE 19958, or via email to newsroom@capegazette.com.
