Northbeach College Day 5K brings 368 runners to Dewey

August 1, 2012

The winner of the 11th annual Northbeach College Day 5K wasn't determined halfway through the 3.1-mile course, but in the final 100 meters. Enos Benbow and Tom Parlapiano rounded the final corner shoulder to shoulder. Parlapiano turned on the jets, but Benbow had enough left in the tank to overtake him and claim the top prize.

"I really enjoy the competition when someone is right on me. because it forces me to push more instead of taking a more measly jog," said Benbow. "That gives me the extra drive to rise a little bit more."

Benbow said Parlapiano tucked in behind him just before the 1-mile marker and stayed with him until the end. Benbow wasn't aware Parlapiano was behind him until he peeked over his shoulder on the last turn.

Benbow has won all Seven Sisters events he has entered and uses the 5K as speedwork for his upcoming Chicago Marathon.

On a hot and humid morning, the event drew 368 participants. Many wore their college colors and were part of beach house teams.

Sarah Mandes, 34, of Arlington, Va., won the women's title in 19:06, finishing sixth overall. Runner-up was Tara Cavaselis, 35, of Wilmington, in 19:50. The masters competition was won by 49-year-old Jeff Smith from Camp Hill, Pa., finishing ninth overall in 19:14.
