Nurses & Neighbors supports Shepherd’s Office and La Red Health
To raise funds to fight food insecurity and promote health literacy in Sussex County, Nurses & Neighbors sold food and drinks at the 17th Annual Mid-Atlantic Sea Glass and Coastal Arts Festival in Lewes. The group netted $2,426, with the Shepherd’s Office and La Red Health Center each to receive $1,213.
Both of these Georgetown-based organizations work with a growing number of individuals who are unhoused and food-insecure in Sussex County.
The Shepherd’s Office provides free meals seven days a week at its Georgetown facility. La Red Health Center’s Produce Prescription Program purchases fresh fruits and vegetables from a local farm to give to patients at its clinics in Georgetown, Milford and Seaford who are struggling to feed their families.
“We are grateful to our neighbors and supporters who share our goal of addressing health by providing access to nutrition and food,” said Bet Key Wong, MSN, RN, CNORe, co-lead for the Nurses & Neighbors health literacy project. “Nurses & Neighbors is joining the Food is Medicine initiative relaunched this year by the White House Conference on Hunger, Nutrition and Health. In addition to addressing food insecurity, our nurses are using health literacy approaches to educate limited English-speaking families on the importance of nutrition and health.”
Nurses & Neighbors is a 501c3 nonprofit with the mission to improve health and wellness within local neighborhoods through nurse-led programs.
