A small group of veterans and Milton city officials gathered Jan. 31 to unveil a new sign reserving a parking spot in downtown Milton for Purple Heart recipients.

Milton Town Council approved installing of the sign in December. The sign is on Chandler Street, next to the entrance to the parking lot behind the Milton Public Library.

This marks the second sign in Milton. The first was installed at the Milton CHEER Center, 24855 Broadkill Road.

John Jackson,  Military Order of the Purple Heart Chapter 1787 commander, was on hand for the unveiling. He said these parking spots are in all 50 states, creating a symbolic trail that honors all men and women who have been wounded or killed in combat while serving in the U.S military.

Additional Sussex County parking spaces for Purple Heart recipients are the Bridgeville Rifle & Pistol Club, Toddy's Auto Sales in Lewes, AutoWorks in Lewes and Dagsboro, and the Milford CHEER Center.

MOPH Chapter 1787 serves combat-wounded veterans in both Kent and Sussex counties. For more information about membership or having a Purple Heart parking sign placed at a particular location, contact John Jackson at MOPH1787@gmail.com or 302-228-9577.
