For more than a century, education has been a cornerstone of the General Federation of Women’s Clubs. In support of its Education Community Service Program, the Village Improvement Association applied for and was accepted as a book giver for International Book Night U.S.
On April 23, Shakespeare’s birthday, 20 copies of books were distributed to people who don’t ordinarily purchase or read books. The goal of the program is to enrich lives through reading.
World Book Night is a non-profit organization that began in the U.K. and is enjoying its second year in the U.S. Authors waive their royalty rights and publishers pay the cost of printing this special edition.
Copies of books were distributed to the Community Resource Center in Rehoboth Beach and to SAFE, a shelter for women and children in Milford. Twenty copies of "The Language of Flowers" by Vanessa Diffenbaugh, a novel about a young woman exiting the foster care system, were distributed at the People’s Place group home for foster care girls ages 13 to 18.
