Patricia Beckett-Effort, devoted to church, community

July 26, 2024

Patricia Beckett-Effort was born in North Tarrytown, N.Y., Dec. 21, 1939, and her journey through life was one of compassion, dedication, and service.

Patricia graduated from North Tarrytown High School in 1957 and went on to attend Westchester Community College. Faith was an integral part of her life, and she actively participated in churches in Tarrytown. She found solace and purpose within the walls of the Church of St. John the Evangelist in White Plains.

Influenced by her grandmother, Alice Thomas, and her mother, Lena Beckett, Patricia dedicated herself to fostering children. From 1961-79, she collaborated tirelessly with Cardinal McCloskey School and Home, as well as other foster care agencies in Westchester. Her home became a haven for several foster children, providing them with love, stability, and hope.

Patricia’s commitment extended beyond her home. In May 1972, she played a pivotal role in organizing the NAACP chapter in Tarrytown. As secretary, she attended conferences and meetings, and tirelessly reported back to the Tarrytown members. Her dedication to civil rights and equality was unwavering.

She also served as a Tarrytown Red Cross volunteer from 1975-78 and a board member from 1978-80. Her involvement in ATT Communications, White Plains, N.Y. board of education, Live Oaks Condominium board of managers, and the Telephone Pioneers of America highlighted her leadership and commitment to community betterment.

Patricia married Reginald (predeceased) Aug. 31, 1991, and they relocated to Lewes in 2000. Their love was a testament to enduring companionship and shared dreams.

Patricia leaves behind her foster sister, Sylvia Chaleman-Lindo; and precious friend, Tina Washington. Patricia’s circle of cherished friends will also keep her memory close.

As we bid farewell to Patricia, let us celebrate her legacy—a life well-lived. Rest in peace, dear Patricia. You will be missed.
