The Pines, an American bistro in Rehoboth Beach, recently named Kyle Berman as executive chef for the restaurant, part of Second Block Hospitality Group.

“We are excited to have someone with Kyle’s caliber overseeing the kitchen,” said Bob Suppies, who owns The Pines American Bistro with David Gonce, Tyler Townsend and Lion Gardner.

“He’s all about the guest experience and is dedicated to culinary excellence,” said Gardner, an acclaimed chef and the former owner of Blue Moon in Rehoboth Beach.

Berman, who grew up in Philadelphia, has fallen in love with Delaware’s Culinary Coast.

“The restaurant scene is so vibrant and collaborative,” Berman said. “There are also so many local purveyors in the region with outstanding products.”

Berman has a bachelor’s degree in business law and marketing from Temple University but couldn’t stay out of the kitchen. Instead of working in an office, he studied under James Beard Award-winning chefs and worked in three Michelin-star restaurants.

The young chef honed his craft in Philadelphia, Miami, London, Chicago, Louisiana, California and New York – where his mentors were uncompromising European chefs.

Berman was executive chef of The Study Hotel near the University of Pennsylvania when he learned about The Pines. “It seemed like a good fit,” said the father of two, who was looking for a place to raise his family.

“Kyle has mastered classic techniques, but he’s not afraid to flex his creativity,” Gardner said.

Gardner is no stranger to innovation. He helped develop and open Drift Seafood & Raw Bar in August 2022 and the pan-Asian Bodhi Kitchen in 2023. Both are part of Second Block.

The Pines espouses a modern, lively atmosphere and a menu married to fresh, high-quality ingredients. The handcrafted food is approachable yet rooted in classic techniques, such as sauces from scratch and eye-catching presentations.

Located at 56 Baltimore Ave. in downtown Rehoboth Beach, The Pines is named for the section of the city where evergreens meet the ocean. The American Bistro, whose appealing decor salutes its hometown, draws inspiration from local influences and natural surroundings. Guests can expect handcrafted, modern American cuisine served in a lively atmosphere. There is a special upstairs area called the Treehouse Lounge, with live entertainment and catering space.
