Plans for Old Landing-Warrington include roundabout
Delaware Department of Transportation officials unveiled alternatives for two road improvement projects at the Warrington Road and Old Landing Road intersection, and an extension of Airport Road across Old Landing Road to a new extension to Route 24 near Rehoboth Beach.
DelDOT presented the alternatives during an April 4 workshop at Beacon Middle School. Both projects are in the design phase with no timelines determined for construction.
The public can comment on the alternatives by Tuesday, May 2, via email to dotpr@state.de.us.
Although DelDOT's website lists a proposed roundabout at the Warrington Road-Old Landing Road intersection, alternatives with a traffic signal were also presented.
The four-way stop intersection has been a hot topic for residents who use the road, as backups and delays are common, especially during the summer months. Several new subdivisions, including Arbor-Lyn, Redden Ridge, Osprey Point and Wellesley at Hidden Meadow, and the Beebe Healthcare Specialty Surgical Hospital have added more traffic to the intersection. The Rehoboth Beach library is also looking to relocate to a parcel on Warrington Road across from the Beebe hospital.
When all the subdivisions are completed, an additional 574 homes will be added to the area.
The alternatives include a regular roundabout, a mini roundabout and a traffic signal. Transportation officials said some of the alternatives would require obtaining rights of way from property owners who live at the intersection, but all alternatives were designed to minimize any land purchases. Officials said the Homestead Bed & Breakfast at the intersection would remain.
Airport Road
DelDOT has had plans to extend Airport Road to Route 24 for years. The project would include improved intersections along Airport Road at Old Landing Road and Miller Road. A new road would be constructed from a current stub road adjacent to the Beebe Healthcare campus and Seaglass Apartments.
The alternatives include a connection road using Copper Drive, an existing road at the eastern edge of the Sterling Crossing community, and a separate road bypassing the community. Two of the alternatives include a roundabout at the Mercury Drive intersection in the community.
Improvement alternatives to the Miller Road-Airport Road intersection include signalized and non-signalized options.
