Delaware State Police are asking residents to report suspicious drones through an anti-terrorism tipline.
While the operation of a drone is legal, police said, if a drone appears to be suspicious or in an area deemed suspicious, residents can report the sighting to the Delaware Anti-Terrorism Tipline at 1-800-FORCE-1-2, or by emailing force12@delaware.gov.
“Reporting these events in this manner will allow experts to evaluate the details of the event for proper action,” police said.
Police remind residents that shooting at aircraft, including drones, is illegal. Drone flights after dark are permitted under certain conditions, and many manned and unmanned legal aircraft have visible lights at night.
Before reporting an incident, police said, residents should consider using FlightAware, Flightradar24, and ADSBexchange to help identify aircraft that may appear unusual but are operating legally.
If a drone is spotted, police recommend taking a clear video from a safe location, record specific details, including the sighting’s date, time, duration and location, and note the size, movement, and unique features of the object.
If a drone is found on the ground, police said call 911 immediately and stay at a safe distance.
“Your vigilance ensures that reports are directed to the appropriate agency, helping law enforcement focus on critical incidents and maintain public safety. Thank you for your cooperation and commitment to keeping Delaware safe,” police said.
