Portside beats Starboard 13-10 in lacrosse club season final

When you have two bar-sponsored lacrosse teams going at it in the last game of the season for bragging rights, the action doesn't stop as the Portside Bar of Baltimore defeated the Starboard lacrosse team 13-10 at the Cape Henlopen second turf field June 23.

The action heated up quickly on the 100-plus-degree turf as each team scored three in the opening quarter. Portside took a 7-5 lead into the steamy halftime break.

The third period found each team tallying two goals, with Portside closing out the game with a 4-3 edge in the fourth quarter.

Former Cape standout Spencer Steele led the Starboard team with three goals. Teammate Danny Marhol tallied two and Cape grad Joey Cahill, Caesar Rodney grad Erik Hoffstadt, Chris Gill, Charlie Gibson and Eric Diprosero each hit the back of the net with one goal.

Former Cape goalie Franc Cook stopped 21 Portside shots in the contest for the Dewey-based team.

Portside was paced by Gibbs Preston with three goals; Jeff Joy, Brent Hargest, Greg Franzen and Mike Wockunas each scored two times. Scott Slosson and Colton Vosburgh scored one.

Portside keeper Rich Thomas stopped 18 Starboard shots.
