Possum Juniors, the youth affiliate of Possum Point Players, will present “Into the Woods” Friday to Sunday, July 19 to 21, at Possum Hall, 441 Old Laurel Road, Georgetown.

Friday and Saturday shows start at 7:30 p.m., and the Sunday matinee is at 2 p.m. The theater is fully air-conditioned and offers ample free parking in its lot. Possum Hall has a complete refreshment center with beverages and snacks that can be taken into the theater.

Tickets are $12 for students and $15 for adults. To purchase tickets, go to possumpointplayers.org or call 302-856-4560. If available, tickets may be purchased at the door the day of the performance beginning one hour before show time.

“Into the Woods” co-directors are Carter Huffman and Zach Burger will oversee more than 20 actors singing and dancing to the music of Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine. The Possum Juniors crews designed and constructed the set, while others worked on costuming, all with some guidance and support from PPP trustees, parents and members.

Audiences will recognize hints of traditional Brothers Grimm fairy tales in the songs and stories about wishes, families going upside down and sideways, and the choices some make and consequences that might follow. Lapine and Sondheim wove everyone's favorite storybook characters into a timeless, yet relevant and rare modern classic.

Lorraine Leavel, Possum Juniors advisor, said, “The book and score are both enchanting and touching. Wishes rank high in fairy tales, and ‘Into the Woods’ definitely features some wishes and what they might lead to.”

Central to the story are a baker and his wife who wish to have a child; Cinderella, who wishes to attend the king's festival; and Jack, who wishes his cow would give milk. Included in the mix are a witch who put a curse on the baker and wife, magic beans that lead to the infamous beanstalk; Rapunzel, who might be having a bad hair day; and a careless Little Red in a riding hood. Wishes get granted, but the consequences can lead to giants, pompous and prissy princes, and maybe a big bad wolf.

Possum Juniors’ production of “Into the Woods” is appropriate for all audiences. Younger siblings, aunts and uncles, grandparents and families next door can expect to see familiar faces among the large cast.
