Leaves are turning, soybeans are being harvested and pumpkin patches are producing. Once again it is time for the annual World Championship Punkin Chunkin returning after a two-year hiatus to the Wheatley Farm in Bridgeville, Friday-Sunday, Nov. 4-6.
This year, over 100 teams from around the world are traveling to Sussex County with their trebuchets, centrifugals, torsions, catapults and air cannons to compete for the coveted one-mile shot and a new world record. With two years of testing and tuning away from the annual competition, teams are eager to see how they will stack up against other competitors whom they haven't seen recently.
There will be family-friendly activities to keep every spectator entertained throughout the day. It all starts with a great band line-up each day and lots of vendors. Attendees will want to be sure to check out the pumpkin cooking contest, chili cook-off contest and the Miss Punkin Chunkin Pageant. To maintain a safe, fun, and family friendly atmosphere, a large beer garden has been added where adults can try some of the best local craft beers, without the challenges posed by past years' BYOB events.
Science Channel will be covering the event once again this year, bringing Mythbusters alumni Kari Byron and Tory Belleci, as well as co-host Kyle Hill to cover the event. Adding to the celebrity presence, Tim Smith from the popular show “Moonshiners” will be stopping by Saturday near team Second Amendment.
