Puzzles was established in 1992, and Lewes Gourmet in 1993 by Gavin and Lou Braithwaite, and the shops’ first home was on the corner of Second and Market streets where the latter was known as the Union Jack. They moved to the current locations at 108 and 110 Front St. in 2006. Anglo-Americans Tim Southerst and Andrea Spuck took over ownership of the stores in 2015, after a home exchange brought their family to Lewes for the first time. Having never heard of or visited Lewes until the 21st century, Southerst and Spuck have personal connections to William Penn, who named Lewes, and to the War of 1812 bombardment of Lewes.
As a Benefit Corporation and through their commitment to 1% For The Planet, Puzzles and Lewes Gourmet regularly support local nonprofits. They worked with acclaimed British designer Victoria Eggs to create a unique Lewes design that recognizes and celebrates all things Lewes and the Cape Henlopen region. All profits from the sale of Lewes design dish towels, aprons, mugs and posters are given to local nonprofits, as are profits from special commemorative puzzle sales.
