Quest opens beach shack at Roosevelt Inlet in Lewes

June 16, 2020

A modest shack sits on the beach just east of the dune crossover from the public parking lot at Roosevelt Inlet in Lewes.

Added by Matt Carter of Quest Adventures a few weeks ago, the shack offers chairs, umbrellas, kayaks, stand-up paddleboards, floating mats and games for beachgoers. Later this summer, they’ll begin to offer a setup for bonfires and beach parties.

“We’ve had a great response so far,” Carter said. “I’ve talked to a lot of people, and it seems like they’re very happy for us to be here.”

Quest’s base of operations is next to the Beacon Motel on Savannah Road. They also have a shack at the fishing pier in Cape Henlopen State Park, a self-serve station behind Irish Eyes in Milton and another location at Abbott’s Mill Nature Center in Milford.

The Roosevelt Inlet location was chosen because it is where Quest has frequently delivered in recent years.

“It’s important for us to improve our delivery system, so we can accommodate the customer a lot better and faster,” he said. “It also alleviates a lot of driving for us up and down Cedar Street.”

The Roosevelt Inlet shack will be open only on weekends until mid-June when schools traditionally let out for the summer.

“That’s kind of the light switch for here,” he said.

Although some walk-ups may be accommodated, Carter recommends people make reservations to ensure they get what they need.

“We’re going to have a limited stock here at first,” he said. “As demand calls, we’ll have more.”

The Roosevelt Inlet location also has a beach access chair available for people who are unable to get to the beach. The chair was provided by Mason’s Mobility Mission, a nonprofit started by Matt and his wife Sara. Sara’s son Mason Moore uses a wheelchair as a result of NGLY1, an extremely rare genetic disorder. Quest has a second chair at its Savannah Road location that can be delivered anywhere in Lewes.

“It’s always free,” Carter said. “We highly encourage reservations. We just ask people to go to www.masonsmobilitymission.org and donate toward a great cause.”

Carter is hoping to acquire a third chair soon.
