Race4Warriors raises awareness, funds for veterans in Sussex County

May 21, 2024

The Race4Warriors organization launched its fourth annual event May 11 at Fort Miles in Cape Henlopen State Park.

“The Race4Warriors is not just another race to raise money to support our veterans; it is an event that captures our mission and vision through competition, education and celebration,” said Race4Warriors founder Michael Bellerose.

Participants of all ages and activity levels, military and civilian, competed in one of three races by running, marching, or marching with a 15-pound pack of nonperishable foods to be donated to homeless veteran shelters. All races are considered challenges, as they are not typical, with at least a half-mile taking place on sand.

“One day in January 2018, my daughter Kinsey and I were having a conversation about how I needed to be involved in something which would have an impact in our community,” Bellerose said. “For many years, while serving in the Air Force, I was involved with some great airmen and we made a difference. We made a positive impact in our surrounding communities, which made our Air Force stronger.”

The Race4Warriors organization operates with no paid employees. The proceeds raised are used to orchestrate the event and support wounded warriors (35%) and homeless veterans (35%). The remaining 30% is donated to Fort Miles Historical Association, JROTC training support, and Army and Air Force First Sergeant Councils.
