The Southern Delaware Alliance for Racial Justice recently honored Beacon Middle students Carter Gibbons and Cianna Steer for their leadership, improvement, effort and excellence.
Carter Gibbons is a school leader who unites classmates, helps peers who need assistance and brings humor to the classroom. Without being asked, Carter often jumps in to help classmates understand assignments. He is a good citizen both inside and outside of school.
Cianna Steer is the type of student who does what is right even when no one is looking. She started the school years as a shy student who barely spoke up in class. Today, she frequently participates and shares her talents with her classmates. She has emerged as a leader in her classes.
Each student received a $20 gift card to Browseabout Books in Rehoboth and the youth version of the book “Just Mercy,” by Cape High grad Bryan Stevenson, a civil rights attorney and founder of the Equal Justice Initiative organization.
SDARJ’s education committee initiated the award to recognize students in the Cape district who represent ideals of leadership, effort and excellence in their schools. A nonpartisan organization, SDARJ educates, informs and advocates for racial justice, equality and fair opportunity. For more information, go to sdarj.org.
