Ralph Baird, who coached Cape basketball for 10 years in the 1970s and led the team to state championships in 1975 and 1976, was inducted into the Delaware Afro American Sports Hall of Fame April 20 at a banquet held at the Modern Maturity Center in Dover
Baird’s state championship team of 1975 is considered by many Delaware scholastic basketball aficionados to be the best ever in Delaware. Baird’s teams from 1974,1975 and 1976 amassed a three-year record of 70-3.
Baird is not Afro American but was nominated by Hall of Fame members Jimmy Allen and Johnny Bishop, who played for Baird and felt they wanted their coach to be in the hall of fame alongside them.
