Rare antenna kite on display at Fort Miles Museum

February 27, 2024

Visitors to Fort Miles Museum can now get a close look at the Bendix M-357-A Antenna Kite on display in the Battery 519 Gallery.

This rare, 80-year-old United States Army Air Forces kite was used to hoist the antenna for the SCR-578 survival radio of World War II fame.

The radio was issued with multi-man life rafts during WWII. A 260-foot antenna cable was attached to the kite, which was tossed into the air. These kites were manufactured by the Bendix Aviation Corporation from 1941 through the end of WWII.

The kite has been donated by Fred Noll, a longtime member of the Fort Miles Historical Association.
