Ray William A. Pettyjohn, hardworking man, poultry farmer

Ray William A. Pettyjohn, 89, of Georgetown, passed away peacefully at Lifecare at Lofland Park in Seaford Sunday, July 28, 2024.

Ray was born in Philadelphia, Pa., Jan. 1, 1935, son of the late Otwell Guy Pettyjohn and Anna (Warren) Pettyjohn.

Ray worked for many years with Delaware Electric Co-Op as a lineman and field engineer, and later worked in shipping and receiving before retiring. Ray had also worked for the DuPont Company in Seaford and All American Engineers in Georgetown. Never one to be idle, he raised chickens for over three decades for Perdue Farms, as well as operated school buses, and later drove for Dutton Bus Service.

Ray’s memberships included past master of Franklin Lodge No. 12 AF & AM, Evergreen Forest No. 49 Tall Cedars of Lebanon, Nur Temple Shriners, past commodore of Indian River Yacht Club, Twinkle Club dance group, and past president of Georgetown High School Alumni Association.

In addition to his parents, Ray is preceded in death by a brother, Warren Pettyjohn.

He is survived by his wife, Barbara (Seely) Pettyjohn; three children, Mark Pettyjohn (Jennifer) of Georgetown, Kelly Franzoni (Paul) of Camden, Brian Pettyjohn also of Georgetown, and their mother, Barbara Harsch of Milton; a stepdaughter, Kim Disharoon (Eric); five grandchildren, David Carey, Daniel Carey (Andrea), Zachary Pettyjohn (Melissa), Cori Beth Banning and Mollie Pettyjohn (and her mother, Kelly); several great-grandchildren; and nieces and a nephew.

A Masonic service will be held at 12:45 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 3, at Short Funeral Services chapel, 609 E. Market St., Georgetown, with funeral services beginning at 1 p.m. A time of visitation for family and friends will begin at 11 a.m  Interment will immediately follow at Union Cemetery, Georgetown.

In lieu of flowers, the family welcomes contributions to Lifecare at Lofland Park, Activities Department, 715 E. King St., Seaford, DE 19973.
