Reading nook set up at Midway Ocean Suds II Laundromat

Cape Bookmobile and Lewes library arrange outreach services
December 3, 2019

As part of their community outreach services, the Lewes Public Library and Cape Henlopen School District Bookmobile delivered a bookshelf of kids’ books to the Ocean Suds II Laundromat in the Midway Shopping Center.

“We know there are some families who might not come through the doors of the library for one reason or another,” said Jennifer Noonan, children’s librarian. “The Lewes Public Library is always looking for ways to meet people where they are. If they can’t come to the library, we want to come to them.”

Cape Henlopen School District Supervisor of Elementary Education Donna Kolakowski was instrumental in getting the Cape Bookmobile started more than six years ago. The books it distributes to local children are free, for them to keep, and provided through donations and a partnership with Browseabout Books.

“The Cape Henlopen School District is excited to partner with the Lewes Public Library to help put books in the hands of children,” said Kolakowski. “We have been driving into communities for the past six summers and are always looking for ways to promote early literacy.”

The bookshelf is stationed in the rear of the Ocean Suds II Laundromat, which has a dedicated area with toys and activities for small children. “We think these books will be a great addition to the space they’ve created, and will help to make the weekly laundry chores a little easier for families. We hope they enjoy them,” said Noonan.
