Preregistrants for Jennifer Ackerman’s free presentation in Lewes Saturday, March 21, will have a chance to attend an exclusive reception with the acclaimed author and receive a signed copy of one of her books.

The presentation and reception will cap six months of community activities focused on “Birds by the Shore,” a revised and reissued edition of Ackerman’s first book, “Notes from the Shore,” written when she lived in Lewes in the early 1990s. The events are part of the inaugural Lewes Loves Books program, spearheaded by the Lewes Public Library and biblion with the support of a dozen local organizations.

Ackerman will discuss “Birds by the Shore,” take audience questions and sign copies of the book at the Cape Henlopen High School Theatre, beginning at 2 p.m. Admission is free, but preregistration is encouraged through the Lewes Public Library’s website, www.lewes.lib.de.us, or by calling the library at 302-645-2733.

Five individuals who preregister by 5 p.m., Monday, March 16, will be selected in a random drawing to attend a reception with Ackerman Friday, March 20, at the Lewes Public Library. Each winner will be able to bring one guest, and will receive a signed copy of either “Birds by the Shore” or Ackerman’s 2016 New York Times best-seller, “The Genius of Birds.”

Joining the Lewes Public Library and biblion as partners in the Lewes Loves Books program are Browseabout Books, Cape Henlopen State Park, the Center for the Inland Bays, the Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control, Friends of Prime Hook, the Lewes Chamber of Commerce, the Marine Education, Research & Rehabilitation Institute, Sea Grant Delaware, the Sussex Bird Club, the Sussex County Department of Libraries, the University of Delaware College of Earth, Ocean, and Environment, and the university’s Osher Lifelong Learning Institute.

The organizations have hosted more than a dozen lectures, hikes and other events built around “Birds by the Shore” since the launch of Lewes Loves Books in October 2019. The program is part of the American Library Association’s One Book, One Community initiative. With approximately 150 local groups participating nationwide, the initiative brings people together to read, discuss and explore a single book selected by each community’s organizers.
