Rehoboth’s Dave Marshall coaches tennis team to pro title
Edoardo Roger-Vasselin and Santiago Gonzalez, coached by Dave Marshall of Rehoboth Beach, recently won the Miami Open Master Series 1000 by defeating Nicholas Mahut and Austin Krajicek in the finals 7-6, 7-5. Marshall, who co-coached the Bryan brothers with Dave MacPherson until their retirement in 2020, has been coaching Roger-Vasselin following the Bryans’ retirement.
The unseeded team of Roger-Vasselin and Gonzalez defeated many of the top teams during the Sunshine Cup Master Series run. They defeated a list of who’s whos on the doubles tour.
Roger-Vasselin becomes the third man to win a professional title after a hip replacement; Bob Bryan and Andy Murray are the others. He becomes only the second man to win a Master Series title with a replaced hip, with Bob Bryan the other. Marshall, who has had both hips replaced, has won the coveted USTA Gold Ball and has been ranked No. 1 in USTA senior tennis nationally, coached both men to their titles after hip replacement.
With the win, Roger-Vasselin and Gonzalez become the second-raked team in the world. Marshall has coached three teams to No. 1 — the Bryan brothers, Mike Bryan-Jack Sock, and Gabriela Dabrowksi-Giuliana Olmos.
In the past two years, Roger-Vasselin has won three titles and reached the finals of three tournaments, one being a Grand Slam final, the U.S. Open mixed.
