Rehoboth Beach bridge construction in 1924

May 2, 2017

In an area riddled with so much water, bridges play an important role in getting people to their destinations efficiently.

In August of 1924, construction was underway on a drawbridge crossing the Lewes-Rehoboth Canal in Rehoboth Beach. The canal itself, connecting Lewes Creek to the north and Rehoboth Creek to the south, was also new at that time, which necessitated the drawbridge construction.

This photograph, made on a glass negative for Delaware’s Board of Agriculture, was taken from the north looking south.  Also visible are the tall smokestack for the Stokely Van Camp cannery and the most southerly bridge across the canal, both to the south.
