Rehoboth Beach voters head to the polls Aug. 10

Rehoboth Beach voters will head to the polls Saturday, Aug. 10, to cast ballots in the city’s 2024 municipal election.

This will be the city’s first election in three years, as Suzanne Goode, Rachel Macha, Mark Saunders and Craig Thier vie for two open seats. Sitting Commissioners Toni Sharp and Tim Bennett decided not to run for re-election.

No matter who wins, those elected will serve as commissioners for the first time. Winners will be sworn in for three-year terms during the city’s organizational meeting in September.

During an Aug. 7 meeting of the Rehoboth Beach Board of Elections, Chair Stephen Simmons said the city had issued 506 absentee ballots and, as of Aug. 7, had received 417 of them back. The board approved a motion to convene at 3 p.m. the day of the election to begin counting the absentee ballots.

Lynne Coan, city spokesperson, said as of July 29, there were 1,664 registered voters. However, she said, the number may decline slightly before election day if there are properties that have been sold this past month.

The election will take place from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 10, in the Rehoboth Beach Convention Center, 229 Rehoboth Ave.

Any qualified elector may request an absentee ballot by filing a request for an absentee ballot form, which is available online, no later than noon, Friday, Aug. 9. Ballots must be received by mail or in person before the polls close on the day of the election. The deadline to register to vote in this election was July 11.
