Last weekend saw Rehoboth’s neighborhoods and St. Edmond Catholic Church during Saturday mass disturbed by chanting and aggressive protestors against visiting President Joe Biden, with one sign, protesting “Kibbutz Biden,” reeking of antisemitism. The group called themselves De Actions 4 Palestine. Two women in a pedal cart extended the outrage with a sign detailing “Free Palistine (misspelled) Congo Sudan Okinawa Hawaii,” thereby informing us of the existence of genocidal war crimes in one of the 50 U.S. states. And I had thought Hawaii was free.
As a veteran of many anti-war and civil rights protests in the 1960s, let me counsel these visitors to check the spelling, geography and ethnic slurs on their signs; respect the rights of private neighborhoods and respond to the needs of public safety by applying to demonstrate in open public spaces; and have enough common decency to not violate the rights of religious worshipers.
