The Rehoboth Beach Seashore Marathon and Half Marathon were run under perfect conditions Dec. 4, with 740 runners completing the full marathon and another 1,518 who ran, in their own words, “just the half.”
Tyler Muse, 28, finished as overall winner in the marathon with a time of 2:27:27. Muse separated from the pack by the 2.5-mile mark, and by eight miles, he was four minutes ahead.
Maryna Novik, 39, of Norway was the overall women’s winner in 2:52:25.
Jerry Tylutki, 41, of Sauquoit, N.Y., was male masters winner in 2:43:02. Erin Fitzgerald, 41, was female masters champion in 2:54:25.
Local Martin Rodriguez was seventh overall in 2:46.25, with Francisco Puac finishing 10th in 2:47:57.
Adan Howard of the Body Shop ran 3:42 :31.
Mike DiGenarro, 43, of Wilmington was overall winner in the half with a time of 1:15:49. Edna Herzon-Vitto, 28, of Washington, D.C., was the overall women’s winner in 1:24.26.
Pete LoBianco, 43, ran 1:17 to capture the male masters title, while Jenifer Martin won the female masters in 1:26:21.
Local male runners (by residence or racing history) earning age-group titles included Greg Cauller, 60-64, 1:28.21; Israel Colon, 65-69, 1:48:43; and Jack Noel, 80 and over, 4:06:44.
Women’s age-group winners were Cindy Conant, 60-64, 1:32:46; Mary Kessler, 70-74, 1:57:25; and Joann Szczepkowski, 75-79, 2:14: 26.
The races are chip-timed, and use common start and finish lines. Race strategies for these longer-distance events are mostly personal, as you never know who is turning around early because they are running “just the half.”
The common finish line also pushes the elite marathon runners into the back of the pack. Half-marathoner fans can tell the difference by the color of the bib or cut of the jib, also known as body type.
