Rehoboth a Top 10 beach town for families

City lands on Parents Magazine list of top beach destinations
May 17, 2013

Parents Magazine named Rehoboth Beach one of America's Top 10 beach towns for families, to be unveiled in the magazine's June issue.

Rehoboth came in at No. 10 on the list, citing the multitude of activities for kids, such as sand castle-building, kite-flying on the beach and riding rides at Funland. The magazine also noted the city’s family-friendly hotels and abundant shopping.

City Manager Greg Ferrese said, “It’s an honor. The city deserves it.”

Parents magazine has a circulation of 15 million. The list of top-10 beach towns will be featured in the magazine’s June issue.

“We’re talking big time,” Ferrese said.

He attributed the city’s ranking in part to infrastructure investment, such as the 2012 beach renourishment that made the beach wider, the Rehoboth Avenue Streetscape project and reconstruction of the Boardwalk.

The magazine compared beaches using the Natural Resources Defense Council’s water quality rankings – Rehoboth and Dewey Beach have scored five-star rankings two years in a row – and narrowed the list down to the top 100 based on water quality. Beaches without lifeguards on duty were eliminated. Parents then reviewed the number of public restrooms, changing areas, beachside amusements and hotels and entertainment options.

Parents editor-in-chief Dana Points said, “Successful family vacations are about finding a balance. If you find a spot that has something for everyone, you know you’ve struck gold.”

The No.1 ranked beach was Hilton Head Island, S.C., followed by Coronado, Calif., and St. Pete Beach, Fla. Cape May, N.J., made the list at No.5.
