Retirees with reasons to celebrate!
The Independence Community celebrated the conclusion of its three-month contest, Biggest Loser, May 1. Michael, a retired principal who inspired his neighbors to attend his exercise classes and monthly health forums, says, “They were all winners, losing a total of 145.3 pounds, and each received a framed certificate of achievement. Another testimony to the success of the program is the increased numbers of walkers, bikers and residents attending classes and working out in the community gym.”
Back in the bike saddle this month for me, too. Riding a bike is pure joy and makes me feel young again - OK, younger. Still reason to celebrate making the pedals go round just like they did when I rode my blue Sears and Roebuck over to a friend’s house to swap the latest Nancy Drew mystery.
A celebratory dinner occurred at the College of Earth, Ocean and Environment April 30, when Dean Nancy Targett thanked about 14 docents and trainees for their time spent teaching visitors about marine science in action. Lead docent Roz Troupin was recognized for her 10 years of service as well as Bob Carnahan, who was the first docent to ever serve the college. My husband Ray, one of the new trainees, is as excited as our puppy Gracie to share what he has learned.
Docent Janice Pinto, a retired health science teacher, wants everyone “to be amazed at what goes on here!” Tours of the Hugh R. Sharp Campus begin at 10 a.m., Fridays in June. In July and August, tours begin at 10 a.m., Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. In addition to scheduled summer public tours, the college hosts year-round private tours for groups of five or more people between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m., Monday through Friday. Beth Joyner was the graduation speaker May 4 at the preschool Lullaby Learning Center, where she volunteers with Read Aloud Delaware. What do you say to a room of 4-year-old graduates and their families? Just a few words from Beth’s speech: “To the parents and families of these children, I want to congratulate you for the way you are raising these children. I want to thank you, too, for allowing me to be a small part of their lives.
Can you believe that your child now knows his colors, his shapes, his ABCs, his days of the week, the months of the year…It’s so much fun to come in and see the joy and love on your child’s face when they realize somebody is going to read to them.
“To the kids - well, soon you’ll be heading off to kindergarten. Miss Beth is so proud of you. As I always tell you, listen to your mommy and daddy, and to your teachers, and you’ll do great. Be good. We’ve had a great time and I will miss you all. You must treasure every minute you have with your child because the time goes by so quickly and they grow up so fast.”
I am proud of Beth, Michael, Roz, Ray and all of the volunteers who have found a way to use their skills to support the community.
