Richard Austin, veteran, legion member
Richard “Vernon” Austin, 90, passed away Wednesday, April 17, 2024, at his home in Bridgeville. Richard was born May 4, 1933, in Seaford, to the late Willis and Violet (Chaffinch) Austin.
He served in the U.S. Army from 1951-53 in Vietnam and was a life member of American Legion Post 6. Richard loved stock cars and NASCAR, mowing the grass, detailing his cars, and reading Western books.
He is preceded in death by his parents, and his brother, Townsend Austin.
He will be greatly missed by his wife, Virginia M. Austin; four children, Gerald Austin, Linda Sandifer, David Austina and Dale Austin (Dianne); 11 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held at noon, Tuesday, April 23, at Short Funeral Services chapel, 609 E. Market St., Georgetown. A time of visitation will be held from 11 a.m. to noon. Interment will be at Cokesbury Cemetery, Georgetown.
